Our Gatherings

Heartbeat Church adopts a “house church” model for its small group gatherings. We believe in the priesthood of all believers (1 Peter 2:5) and that all Christians have a calling to reach out to the lost (Matthew 28:10) and demonstrate love to a community (John 13:35). House churches are run by leaders (we call them “shepherds”) to pastor the flock. Weekly Friday gatherings afford a casual but intimate setting in which non-believers can be invited to share their life. House churches are not a bible study group but are intended to be “seeker-friendly”. It is the vehicle by which we aim to carry out the urban mission.

Our Sunday worship service is a contemporary service where all the members of the congregation gather for corporate worship. We currently have three campuses in three different cities (Sydney, Melbourne and Gold Coast) that join together on Sunday for service. For more information on our Sunday gathering please see “Church Campuses”

A Brief History

Heartbeat Church Sydney was established in 2014 as a church plant, starting out in Pastor Joshua Choi’s lounge room with a small group of families. Since then, the congregation has grown to a vibrant multicultural church with predominantly young families and single adults. Gatherings of the Heartbeat Sydney congregation are in the vicinity of 100 people including 20 children and 6 youths. In the past six years, to meet the needs of a growing congregation, we have moved to several venues across Sydney including public facilities in Drummoyne, Rozelle, Lidcombe, Surry Hills and now Concord.

In 2015, Heartbeat Church Sydney was approached by a group of Korean-Australians seeking to plant a church in Melbourne. Heartbeat Church decided to follow God’s lead in this and planted Heartbeat Church Melbourne with a group of 10 people. This small group has remained faithful to the vision and mission of Heartbeat Church and has maintained their gatherings but in a smaller format. Members from the Melbourne campus have joined the broader Heartbeat group for annual retreats, overseas mission trips and online prayer meetings.

In 2018, once again, Heartbeat Church was approached by a group of Korean-Australians seeking to plant a church on the Gold Coast. Heartbeat Church Gold Coast was planted with a small group of people with a strong vision for reaching the English-speaking second-generation migrants of the area. The Gold Coast congregation has also remained faithful to the vision and mission of Heartbeat Church and also joined the broader Heartbeat group for annual retreats and online prayer meetings.

When in Sydney, this team frequently go on outreaches to preach the gospel in areas with high populations of Muslims (e.g. Auburn).
